Söner Watches Around the World

Every gold dot is a country we have sent a rectangular watch to since 2016. Europe is shown again in the inset, because that corner of the map is too crowded to count. No distributors, no retail chain, no advertising budget. Just people who went looking for a rectangular watch and found us.

How a brand this small ends up on six continents

The industry will tell you that reaching the world takes distributors, retail partners, a hundred years of heritage and a large advertising budget. We have none of those. Söner is family-owned, based in Kungsbacka on the Swedish west coast, built without a single outside investor, and named after my two sons, William and Widar. For most of these ten years I packed the orders myself.

What we do have is one decision we have never broken. We only make rectangular and square watches. Never round. That single limitation is the reason people in 62 countries have been able to find us at all. If you want a round watch, there are thousands of brands competing for your attention. If you want a rectangular one, the list is short, and we made sure we were on it.

At one point we turned our paid advertising off completely. The margin was going to ad platforms instead of into the watches, and I would rather spend that money on surgical steel, sapphire crystal and Swiss movements than on impressions nobody remembers. Organic traffic grew 66 percent after we stopped. That told me something about who was actually looking for us.

What the map does not show

A dot is a country, not a story. The map cannot show the customer in Mongolia who wrote to ask whether we really ship that far, or the one in Brunei who sent a wrist shot the day the parcel arrived, or the orders from Jersey and Gibraltar that I had to look up on a map myself before printing the label.

It also does not show the parts that went wrong. The season we lost money on shipping because we had priced it as if the world were Europe. The restocks that ran weeks late. We are still a small company, and some of these countries got their watch later than they should have.

What I keep from all of it is simple enough. A rectangular watch made properly in a small Swedish town turns out to be something people want in places I will probably never visit. That was never obvious to me when I started in 2016, and it still surprises me every time a new country appears on this map.
