Polish Gold Watch Home
Owning a gold watch often comes with a sense of pride, but polishing a high-value timepiece can feel intimidating. The good news: keeping a gold watch clean and bright requires no specialist equipment and no risk of damage — as long as you use the right method. Before we get into how to polish a gold watch at home, here is what you need to know about gold watch types and why the method matters.

What Makes a Gold Watch So Special?
Gold watches have long symbolised luxury, social status, and craftsmanship. Wristwatches made of gold or gold-finish metals remain some of the most desirable accessories in the world — and the type of gold finish on your watch determines exactly how you should clean and maintain it. Here is how to distinguish between the main types:
- Solid Gold: Typically 18-karat gold (75% pure gold, 25% alloy). Durable, permanent, and the most forgiving to polish — but still vulnerable to abrasives that scratch the surface.
- PVD Gold-Tone: Physical Vapour Deposition bonds a gold-tone coating to the steel case at a molecular level. Significantly more durable than standard gold plating. All Söner gold watches use PVD over hardened surgical steel.
- Gold-Plated: A thin layer of gold electroplated over a base metal. The most delicate finish — abrasive cleaning will wear through it quickly.
The cleaning method that is safe for solid gold can damage PVD and will destroy gold plating. Use the correct method for your watch type.

How to Polish a Gold Watch at Home: Essential Steps and Supplies
A gold watch requires regular care. Sweat, skin oils, and dust build up and dull the finish over time. The method below is safe for all gold watch types and requires no specialist equipment.
Polishing a Solid Gold Watch
Supplies needed:
- Microfiber polishing cloth or jeweller's cloth
- Mild soap (dish soap works well)
- Warm water
- Soft-bristle toothbrush
- Dry lint-free cloth
Steps:
- Mix mild soap with warm water in a small bowl.
- Dip a soft toothbrush and gently scrub the case and bracelet, paying attention to joints and links where dirt accumulates.
- Rinse with clean water. Avoid submerging the watch if water resistance is below 5 ATM — use a damp cloth instead.
- Dry immediately with a lint-free cloth. Do not leave water sitting on the case or bracelet.
- Buff with a microfiber polishing cloth in one direction along the brushed surfaces to restore shine.
Important: Do not use toothpaste on solid gold. Toothpaste contains mild abrasives that scratch polished gold surfaces over time. A jeweller's polishing cloth is the correct tool for restoring surface shine between professional services.
Polishing a PVD Gold-Tone or Gold-Plated Watch
Supplies needed:
- Microfiber cloth
- Cotton buds
- Soft toothbrush
- Mild soapy water
Steps:
- Moisten a cotton bud to remove dirt from grooves and recessed details.
- For general cleaning: dip a soft toothbrush in mild soapy water and gently scrub the case and strap edges.
- Rinse with a damp cloth. Never submerge a gold-plated watch.
- Dry thoroughly and buff with a microfiber cloth.
Important: Never use toothpaste, abrasive cloths, or ultrasonic cleaners on PVD or gold-plated watches. These will wear through the coating. Stick to mild soap and soft materials only.

Important Tips for Polishing Your Gold Watch at Home
- Check water resistance before cleaning. If your watch is rated below 3 ATM, avoid running water entirely. Use a damp cloth only.
- Never use abrasives. This includes toothpaste, baking soda, rough cloths, and wire brushes. Any abrasive material will scratch polished surfaces and damage coatings.
- Polish in one direction on brushed surfaces. Polished surfaces can be buffed in any direction. Brushed (satin) surfaces should be polished in the direction of the existing grain to maintain the finish.
- Consider professional polishing once a year. A watchmaker can re-polish case edges and remove deeper scratches that home cleaning cannot address. For solid gold watches especially, this keeps the case looking new long-term.

Maintaining Your Gold Watch for the Long Haul
Regular cleaning prevents the build-up that dulls a gold finish and, over time, can work its way into the case joints and affect the movement. A quick wipe with a microfiber cloth after daily wear takes thirty seconds and makes a significant difference over months and years.
For Söner gold watches specifically: all models use PVD gold-tone over 800HV hardened surgical steel. Clean with mild soapy water and a soft cloth. Avoid toothpaste, abrasives, and ultrasonic cleaners. The PVD coating is considerably more durable than standard gold plating but still requires the gentle approach outlined above.
